Prevent Child Abuse America in the news. The ACE Study. Healthy child development. And GRAND Magazine.

Prevent Child Abuse America is thrilled to be GRANDpartners for Grandparents with GRAND Magazine and Prevent Child Abuse America, President & CEO, Jim Hmurovich recently had the opportunity to talk with GRAND Magazine's Editorial Director Christine Crosby about the Adverse Childhood Experiences study, empathy, and being a grandparent. To read the full interview please click the following link here, and for an excerpt from the interview please read on below.

GRAND: So you advocate for parenting information. Where would you start with that: In the school system? At what level?

JH: Yes, I absolutely advocate for every agency, faith organization, and even corporations who have employee-assistance programs to somehow see the importance of parenting information.

Where would it start? Wow! We are beginning to understand several things about child abuse and, specifically, about bullying and violence. We’re finding out that some of those responses can be built into parenting as early as infancy. One year old, two years old — they start modeling behavior. One of the things I’ve learned, and I’m still in the process of learning, is that when it comes to bullying, in what we interpret as peer-to-peer abuse, the children don’t have empathy and respect for other children. So, to me, that indicates that starting with preschool, kindergarten, grade school, all the way up through high school, we [need to] build into the curriculum of each subject — not just home economics or whatever the new term is — teaching empathy so children understand it’s their responsibility to respect other children.

American Public Human Services Association. Policy & Prevention. Special Issue. Take One.

We wanted to let you know that Prevent Child Abuse America had the chance to steer and/or write several articles for Policy & Practice's special edition focused on child abuse prevention. Policy & Practice is the magazine of the American Public Human Services Association and we are very appreciative to have been given this opportunity. We also want to be sure to share these articles with you and so we thought we would spend the next several days rolling out the individual pieces. The first article we want to share with you is by Prevent Child Abuse America's President & CEO James M. Hmurovich and it is titled Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention is More Than a Funding Stream. We hope you will take a look and we wanted to share a brief description below:

"Child abuse and neglect prevention often invokes the notion of children’s trust funds, Community Based Child Abuse Prevention, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, and other funding streams that support the critical work of preventing the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children."

Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle Tommie Harris of the Chicago Bears donates $20,000 to Prevent Child Abuse America.

Last night at the Tommie Harris Golf Outing Dinner, 3-time Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle Tommie Harris of the Chicago Bears presented James M. Hmurovich, President and CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America with a donation of $20,000.

“We all know he is a great football player, but we need to leave here knowing he also is an extraordinary human being,” Hmurovich said at the dinner. “He plays with all his heart on the gridiron and he gives with all his heart to children and important causes like child abuse and neglect prevention.”

Harris has supported the work of Prevent Child Abuse America for two years now and we look forward to more opportunities where we can come together united in a common passion - the prevention of child abuse and neglect before it ever occurs.

Hmurovich added, “We are proud to have Tommie Harris as a national representative of our cause, to use his celebrity and his skills to help children. It takes a strong person to play football as well as he does; it takes an even stronger person to talk about prevention and send the message that the work we do today to raise our children impacts the kind of nation we will live in, in the future.”
