Dr. Janet Rosenzweig, Vice President for Programs & Research for Prevent Child Abuse America, has published a piece in philly.com titled "What is the rate of child abuse in schools, rec groups?" that looks at "Children Exposed to Abuse in Youth-Serving Organizations," a study published online today in JAMA Pediatrics. According to Dr. Rosenzweig, the study "offers both good news and cause for some concern when it comes to the rate of abuse in these groups." We hope you will take a look and let us know if you have any questions or comments. We have also pasted an excerpt below.

"Results from this study left me with an unanticipated area of concern: Of the children who reported abuse in a youth-serving agency or organization, 64 percent of the abuse by an adult was verbal or emotional. Based on this study, it’s estimated that up to 1 million kids could answer yes to the question: “Did you get scared or feel really bad because grown-ups in your life called you names, said mean things to you, or said they didn’t want you?” Emotional abuse, or bullying by an adult in a youth-serving organization, is 10 times more prevalent than sexual abuse, and the scars can be deep and long lasting. This is unacceptable, and is a call to action for parents.

Parents should consider action on two fronts: with their children and with their youth organizations. First, open communication with their children should include a conversation making it clear that coaches and other adults may say things are difficult to hear sometimes, but remarks from a good coach make a child want to work harder and do better, not make them feel bad or unwanted. Parents should encourage their children to share any concerns about a coach or staff members’ behavior or language.

Secondly, parents and caregivers should also investigate the policies and procedures of any organization serving their children. Learn the basics like how staff and volunteers are screened and trained, but don’t stop there. Most youth sports teams have specific volunteer or required roles to help the team operate, like “snack parent” or “equipment parent.” As the next team season approaches, think about collaborating with other parents to develop a rotating schedule for a “stand parent”, an adult to attend each game or practice to watch from the stands and cheer for each player, while keeping an eye and ear open for inappropriate treatment of kids by staff and volunteers."

For the past ten years I have been honored to be President & CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America. That role is going to change however, because retirement is in my plans for early next year.

The last ten years have seen the incredible expansion of our Healthy Families America home visiting program, now serving 85,000 families each year. Our bullying prevention and child sexual abuse prevention technical assistance services have enhanced the 350 strategies that our 50 state chapters use to support the belief that every child has the right to a great childhood. Without your commitment to this mission, we could not do this.

This very difficult decision has allowed me to reflect not only how important this mission is but how great our supporters are. You have helped prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation's children and for that, I thank you. Your kind, encouraging notes gave me the inspiration to do my job better and for that, I am grateful. You have shown what is possible when people care and that has inspired me.

You have made me believe that prevention is really possible; you have made me believe that people want to make child abuse and neglect not only preventable, but unthinkable; you have made me believe that we all play an important role in each child's life who comes in contact with us.

Thank you for helping me believe that I could do my job; I have not felt alone, because I knew you were there. Please never underestimate the influence your support means to individuals like me.

We have also pasted an excerpt below.

"The video showing a school police officer subduing an unyielding adolescent with force is yet another reminder that children act out. Sadly, that’s not news. What is news is that there are alternate, appropriate ways to deal with troubled teens that benefit both the child and the community.

There are a host of reasons why a child might misbehave, and while the details of this young woman’s life are rightfully private, her attorney has made a public statement that she is in foster care and that is a sign that her nuclear family has been unable or unavailable to raise her.

Traumatic childhood experiences are the subject of many studies currently. Findings indicate that these experiences can have both immediate and lifelong effect on social and emotional health. Collectively called “Adverse Childhood Experiences,” or ACEs, these experiences can actually change the chemistry of a child’s brain and can be a cause for dramatic changes in a child’s behavior.

Prevent Child Abuse America recognizes the profound lessons from the ACE studies and has incorporated the findings into our work at every opportunity. We are particularly proud to be the non-profit partner to the producers of the film Paper Tigers, a documentary showing how the lives of troubled teens are changed when their school adopts a trauma–informed approach."

Prevent Child Abuse America is formally announcing the retirement of
President & CEO James M. Hmurovich. For 10 years, staff and he have
worked to deliver on evidence-based strategies to promote healthy child
development, supportive services for parents, and the primary prevention
of child abuse and neglect. Hmurovich’s last day has not been identified and will be aligned with
the appointment of and transition to a successor, likely in the first
quarter of 2016. A national search for his successor is underway, led by
the National Board of Directors with the help of Phillips Oppenheim. “Jim began his role as President & CEO at a time of significant
change and transformation in the organization’s history,” said Fred
Riley, Board Chair, Prevent Child Abuse America. “He brought a sense of
urgency to achieving financial stability and revenue enhancement, while
never compromising the organization’s focus on children and families. We
are stronger and looking at an even brighter future thanks to Jim’s
efforts and leadership.” During his time at Prevent Child Abuse America, Jim was a member of a
national office team that expanded the organization’s home visitation
program, Healthy Families America, from 360 sites to over 600, increased
the state chapter network from 41 to 50, introduced the Pinwheels for
Prevention campaign as a reminder that child abuse and neglect
prevention is everyone’s responsibility, oversaw the creation of
technical assistance services to the networks on bullying prevention and
child sexual abuse prevention, and the development of a national
movement, Connect the Dots, for children and families. You can read the full release on Hmurovich's retirement here.Prevent Child Abuse Americahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10267226959814482887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648450659119920698.post-79970132252745991922015-10-14T09:27:00.000-05:002015-10-14T09:27:40.966-05:00Prevent Child Abuse America Planted More Than 1,000 Pinwheels at Washington Monument to Celebrate Great Childhoods!

Yesterday Prevent Child Abuse America and its Virginia and Maryland chapters celebrated the great childhoods that all children deserve with a "National Pinwheel Garden" by planting more than 1,000 pinwheels near the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The public and members of event partners General Federation of Women's Clubs, Sigma Delta Tau, Kappa Delta and Chartwells K12 were invited to celebrate the people who helped them enjoy great childhoods by having pinwheels planted in their honor in the National Pinwheel Garden.

"The pinwheel allows us to engage people in a new way," said Prevent Child Abuse America President & CEO James M. Hmurovich. "It provides us with an engaging device to move beyond merely making people aware of child abuse prevention, but motivating them to take action on its behalf. From acts big and small, from providing busy parents with a break to signing onto letters to Congress, each of us can, and must, play a role in ensuring great childhoods for our nation's children. This event in the nation's capital is one more way to convey that message to the country."

On Tuesday, October 13th, Prevent Child Abuse America and its Virginia
and Maryland chapters will celebrate the great childhoods that all
children deserve with a “National Pinwheel Garden” at 11:00am ET near
the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The
pinwheel, derived from Prevent Child Abuse America’s Pinwheels for
Prevention® campaign, is the symbol for child abuse prevention, introduced by the organization nationally in 2008. The public and members of event partners General Federation of
Women’s Clubs, Sigma Delta Tau, Kappa Delta and Chartwells K12 are being
invited to celebrate the people who helped them enjoy great childhoods
by having pinwheels planted in their honor in the National Pinwheel
Garden. Individuals can purchase and dedicate pinwheels here through Monday, October 12th. On Tuesday, October 13th, the pinwheels will be planted on the National Mall. You can read the full press release on the ‘National Pinwheel Garden’ on National Mall here.Prevent Child Abuse Americahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10267226959814482887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648450659119920698.post-9238523113100793882015-09-30T09:50:00.000-05:002015-09-30T09:50:00.422-05:00Kick-Off For Kids 2015 is this Friday, October 2nd.
