We wanted to share one final post highlighting the array of interesting healthy child development and prevention
activities that happened across the country during April and Child Abuse
Prevention Month (CAPM).
At the Cape May, New Jersey Healthy Families
they decorated a large bulletin board in the facility’s meeting room,
combining CAPM with Redeemer Week (a celebration throughout the Holy
Redeemer Health System) with a bridge connecting "Happy, Healthy, and
Safe Children," their CAPM theme, with "Bridges," from their Redeemer
Week theme - "Redeemer HealthCare, HomeCare, LifeCare: Bridges of Hope
and Healing along Life’s Journey.” The children in the Healthy Families
program, colored the pinwheels, representing “a carefree childhood.”
Handprints were used to create the Sun, Water, Clouds, and Land.
In Tampa, Florida, the six Children’s Board Family Resource Centers
celebrated with story time, activities and visits from Sister
Berenstain Bear at each Center. They also participated in the Pinwheels
for Prevention event at the Glazer Children’s Museum.
GFWC Anchorage Woman's Club, GFWC Alaska, GFWC Nome Woman's Club, GFWC Western States Region, GFWC Haines Woman's Club, GFWC Greater Fairbanks Woman's Club members participated in the "Choose Respect" marches on March 28, 2013. Child Abuse Awareness falls under the umbrella of Domestic Violence. General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) has had as its Signature Project, Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention for many years. GFWC Anchorage Woman's Club has also supported this effort for many years. This year they added Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention to their programs and have ordered pinwheels for a child abuse and neglect prevention event they will be holding in the fall.
Pinwheel Gardens were also planted throughout Mendocino County, California.
We want to continue highlighting the array of interesting healthy child development and prevention
activities that happened across the country during April and Child Abuse
Prevention Month.
At Little Lamb Preschool-Keener Kids, Inc. in Vineland, NJ children celebrated by "planting" a pinwheel garden to support this cause.
Oneida Healthcare in Oneida, NY plants a pinwheel peace garden that each April.
The Family & Consumer Science students at Deer Park High School in Houston, Texas, made blue pinwheels with special messages on them and planted theit garden on the wall in our hall.
The United States Department of Navy's 2013 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign theme was "Break the Cycle."
Mattie Moore of Senator Claire McCaskill's Office and Wentzville, Missouri Mayor Nick Guccion support the St. Louis Crisis Nursery.
We are very excited about the array of interesting healthy child development and prevention activities that happened across the country during April and Child Abuse Prevention Month.
We are also excited to acknowledge and highlight some of that work here on the blog, starting with the work of Twin Cedars Youth & Family Services, Inc., a private non-profit offering an array of services ranging from prevention to residential care in four cities including Columbus, LaGrange and Macon, Georgia and Lee County/Opelika Alabama.
Twin Cedars hosted a range of events including:
A “Superhero Day on Broadway” in Columbus, Georgia which included a 5K/1K Superhero Themed Fun Run, Costume Contest, Sidewalk Chalk Contest, and Vendors that offered free child friendly activities - see photo collage above.
A “Stand Up for Children: There is No Excuse for Child Abuse” event in LaGrange, Georgia, with Governor Nathan Deal’s Wife, Sandra providing a key note address; the official signing of the Child Abuse Protocol for the Troup County Children’s Advocacy Center, with Georgia State Representatives Debbie Buckner and Randy Nix in attendance; and the announcement that Twin Cedars will partner with Troup County Family Connection/ Georgia Center for Child Advocacy to offer Stewards of Children (Darkness to Light) Training in Troup County.
Further, in Opelika, Alabama, The Child Advocacy Center of East Alabama hosted the 3rd Annual Dancing With the Stars Fundraiser which yielded more than $166,000, and included Miss America, Mallory Hagan, who attended the event in support of her mother who was a participant in the competition.
Finally, Lee County CASA in Opelika, Alabama was the recipient of a $9,700 donation from Kappa Alpha Theta Chapter of Auburn University. The sorority, whose national philanthropy is CASA held a kickball tournament to support the ongoing efforts of volunteer who serve as caring and quality advocates for children involved in juvenile court deprivation hearings.
We want to thank Twin Cedars for all they do on behalf of children and families, and we hope you will take a moment to do so as well.
We are very excited that Jim was invited to talk about heathy child development, Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the role we all play in prevention on the terrific mom enough show. We are also excited to share the podcast with you - here - and we hope you will share it with your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues as well. Thanks.

With April's Child Abuse Prevention Month set to start next
Monday, please share with us, why you feel it is important that we promote the
healthy development of our nation's children?
We have the opportunity to put a spotlight on healthy child development, the Protective Factors, and the prevention of child abuse and neglect during the month of April, because April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAPM). To prepare for CAPM, we want to encourage you to visit the Child Welfare Information Gateway where you can find an array of resources and materials for the communities you live in. These resources consist of among other things, the Preventing Child Maltreatment and Promoting Well-Being: Network for Action 2013 Resource Guide, Tip Sheets, and an Online Media Toolkit, as well as a range of calendars that provide suggestions for CAPM related activities, including one titled "30 Ways for Community Partners to Promote Child Well-Being During National Child Abuse Prevention Month," which was developed by Prevent Child Abuse America in collaboration with our fellow National Movement for America's Children founding partners.
